Dietitian vs. Nutritionist
A REGISTERED DIETITIAN (RD/RDN) MUST:
Complete a bachelor's degree and receive a verification statement from an ACEND-accredited program (Starting January 1, 2024, a graduate degree will be required)
Complete a rigorous internship: 1200+ hours of supervised practice in various settings (hospital, food banks, kitchens, community)
Pass the National Board Exam
Acquire licensure in state(s) of practice
Use ethical, evidence-based research in making recommendations
Complete 75+ hours of continuing education every 5 years
RD and RDN are equivalent credentials

A NUTRITIONIST* IS:
Anyone who says they are
No formal training required
*Those with a Certified Nutritionist (CN) designation do have formal training of a bachelors degree or higher in nutrition, public health, or other related field. They are required to maintain state licensure, but are not required to complete other items mentioned above.
